A sherd of blue and white decorated tin-glazed ceramic tea cup. This cup was most probably manufactured in Portugal in the late 17th or early 18th centuries. While presenting a popular blue on white porcelain-like appearance, tin-glazed teacup were not favored due to the fact that the glaze, which was not strongly bonded to the body as it was in porcelain or lead-glazed ceramics, often chipped off along the cup rim, presumably leaving bits of tin-glaze in the user’s mouth.
