Gunflints

There was one color of flint recovered from the excavations: light gray to black. These are usually associated with flint coming from England. Flint occurs in Europe most commonly in the form of nodules which erode out of chalk cliffs. The nodules often end up at the bottoms of rivers and beaches at the bases of such cliffs. Three types of gunflints were recovered- one bifacial gunflint from one of the original postholes for the house; two spall type gunflints, a type that would date to before about 1780 or so; and two blade gunflint fragments. Several strike-a-light fragments used to start hearth fires were also found. The bifacial gunflint is shown above in the bottom row, far left side.
