Cutlery

One complete two-tined knife was found at 105 cm in the lower level of the cellar hole. This fork has a pistol-grip slab bone handle and dates to the middle to late 18th century. Two 18th century knives were also found in the cellar. One knife with a forged bolster handle dating from the second to third quarter of the 17th century was found in the yard. One spoon handle from a seal and baluster spoon, dating from the 17th to early 18th century, was found in the North Yard Scatter. The dating of these spoons is somewhat problematic because it seems that early 17th century spoon molds were still being used in the late 17th century. The fact that this spoon is not tinned does help in dating though. Tinning was a technique which was introduced in middle of the 17th century, indicating that this spoon dates to before the middle of the century.
