Westerwald

This is a fragment of a Westerwald stoneware jug dating from the 17th-18th centuries. These were made in Germany, shipped worldwide, and would have been very common on 17th and 18th century tables. The American Revolution and changes in the ceramic industries in the late 18th century effectively ended their import and popularity in New England making them a good “type fossil” for 17th-18th century occupations.
